Keep Weston Lakes Beautiful

Keep Weston Lakes Beautiful (KWLB) is a volunteer group whose goal is to reach into every segment of our community. All residents, men, women, children, students, youth groups, community clubs, POA, civic organizations, public sector, private sector, all to raise the pride level of our community.

Keep Weston Lakes Beautiful is sponsored in part by the Weston Lakes Women’s Association and the Weston Lakes Garden Club.

We are a stand alone 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Mission Statement:

The mission of Keep Weston Lakes Beautiful (KWLB) is to engage and educate our residents to take greater responsibility for improving community environments through education, beautification and volunteerism.

Our goal is to organize, as volunteers, and implement cleanup and educational programs to prevent litter, reduce trash, and beautify our community and natural environment, all to raise the pride level of our community.

KWLB is non-political. We are simply a group of caring resident volunteers pulling together to make our community environment even better.

On January 5, 2017, Weston Lakes became anaffiliatemember of Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB). By doing so, residents of the City of Weston Lakes take responsibility for improving their immediate community’s environment by focusing on litter prevention, community beautification and waste reduction.

In March, 2018, Keep Weston Lakes Beautiful became a Silver Star Affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB).

What We Do:

Community Leadership & Coordination –KWLB has a volunteer Board with no paid staff. The key to our success is our all-volunteer community support. Partnering with the Weston Lakes Garden Club and Women’s Association we were able to start 2017 with a solid volunteer base. We immediately went into action to assist Weston Lakes and Simonton Hurricane Harvey flood victimsin the command center, removal of debris, providing meals, supplies, places to live, packing belongings, cleaning homes and even pet sitting.

Public Awareness –KWLB was featured on the cover of the Fort Bend Herald receiving a $5,000 donation from Aqua Texas for the purchase of a drinking fountain, with dog bowl, and continued support for the beautification of our neighborhood park. KWLB has a continuous 2-page article in the Weston Lakes Country Club monthly newsletter magazine. Featured in West Side Stories magazine, Fulshear Community Newsletter and cover of West Fort Bend Buzz newspaper. Social media sites including Weston Lakes Nextdoor, POA emails, and KWLB facebook page bringing awareness and volunteer participation for Fall Sweep, Adopt-a-Highway, Shred/Recycling events, Don’t Mess With Texas, Texas Trash Off and National Planting Day to name a few.

Education –KWLB education committee provided educational program to 98 students and 24 adults in celebration of Texas Arbor Day. “The Importance of Trees” consisted of a question answer segment, singalong, “Pin the Leaf on the Tree” activity and the distribution of 100 live oak saplings for planting. KWLB held two shred/recycle events supporting Earth Day and America Recycles Day, yielding a combined total of 6,024 lbs of paper and small household appliances. TxDot, and TCEQ activity books were given to all over 100 children at our Easter Festival and 4thof July Parade. Starting with our youth with emphasis on “it’s never to late to make a difference” when it comes to educating all on recycling, re-purposing, waste reduction, litter prevention and water conservation. KWLB and Aqua Texas, hosted a neighborhood “Fence Painting Party” with volunteers repainting the fence that surrounds the water facility. Forty adults and children participated in several education stations that included a fun and edible dirt dessert, “Earthworms, the Tillers of Soil”, teaching the youth and adults the importance of the earthworm to Mother Nature. Another station using the Waste in Place curriculum, “Garbage Pizza” demonstrated the composition of solid waste and visualized the types of trash needlessly entering our landfills. A third station displayed types of paints, both hazardous and nonhazardous, with takeaway information on how to properly dispose of such paints. Though we have no schools in our city, KWLB coordinates with educators at two private schools in our surrounding community, home schooling households and the local Boy Scout troop.

Beautification & Community Improvement –KWLB has partnered with the POA to beautify the front gate main entrances of Weston Lakes and Waterford communities. We help to plan, coordinate and assist in the landscaping of these areas. On 9/9/17, our Bluebonnet Committee members sowed multiple pounds of Lady Bird Johnson Legacy Seed Mix and Bluebonnet seeds in Pecan Park. KWLB partnered with Scout Troop #941, Eagle Scout candidate Nicholas Stephens to plan and install the brick pathway at the entrance of the Randon Bottom Cemetery for our restoration and re-dedication ceremony on 12/2/17.

Litter Prevention & Clean Up –KWLB partnered with Weston Lakes bike club, Babes on Bikes (B.O.B.S.) for Adopt-A-Highway cleanup on 10/24/17 and 1/21/18 to pick up litter along the two mile section of 1093 that runs in front of Weston Lakes community.

Solid Waste Management –Working with local recycling companies, KWLB volunteers held 2 major shred events on 3/31/17 and 11/4/17 that provided a convenient collection drop off for “pre-loved” clothing, shoes, bedding, stuffed animals and accessories to be recycled and re-purposed to reduce the volume of trash to landfills.

Litter Law & Illegal Dumping Enforcement –Keep Weston Lakes Beautiful formed a Litter and Illegal Dumping task force to further research the most successful programs in accordance with Keep Texas Beautiful’s mission in reducing and eliminating littering. Through our facebook page and POA email blasts, over 1,400 property owners receive educational tips on how their involvement can help eliminate this problem completely. Weekly inspections are performed to ensure that neighborhoods are maintained according to all city, county and state litter laws. The POA and Weston Lakes also contract with the County Constable’s office for a full time Constable who reports on any of these violations. At the request of our Mayor, Fort Bend County Environmental Health Department installed signage to discourage and report illegal dumping.
